Marta obtained her PhD within Antonio Cuadrado’s group, where she analysed the role of the transcription factor NRF2 in the modulation of proteostasis, with special interest on autophagy, as well as the impact of NRF2 response on animal models of neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, are linked to the accumulation of specific protein aggregates, suggesting a close connection between injured brain and loss of proteostasis. Knowing the basic mechanisms that allow the cell to maintain the proteome in physiological conditions and which of these are impaired in neurodegenerative diseases may provide new therapeutic strategies to combat them. Currently Marta continues this research topic in the same group as a postdoctoral researcher.
